This is a short teaching excerpted from the fifth Dharma talk on the Discourse on Transforming Violence and Fear and was given by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh on April 29, 2010, in Dharma Nectar Temple, Lower Hamlet, Plum Village France, in the Spring Retreat 2010.

"[W]hen [the scientists] study the elementary particles, they're surprised to see that at times, each of those elementary particles bears a resemblance to a wave. But at other times, it doesn't look like a wave at all—it looks like a particle.
"Meanwhile, in our thinking, in our perception, something can only be one thing, and nothing else. If it's a 'particle,' it can only be a particle, and nothing else. And if it's a 'wave,' it can only be a wave, and nothing else.
"But the truth is, scientists all recognize that this 'guy,' at times, behaves like a particle; but at other times, it behaves like a wave. Calling it a 'particle' won't do it justice. But calling it a 'wave' won't work, either.
"So they come up with a new name, i.e. 'wavicle.' It means, it's both 'particle' and 'wave.' In French, it's 'ondicule,' [combining 'ondules' and 'particule']. "Well, in Buddhism, we have the term nāmarūpa, meaning 'mind-matter'. [Nāma (danh, 名, 'name') refers to 'mind.' Rūpa (sắc, 色, 'form') refers to 'matter'.] Well if we combine these two words nāma (danh 名) and rūpa (sắc 色) into one, it'll be the same as 'wavicle.' They are one, not two. It depends on our mind."
