In this talk given in 2003, Thay defines what happiness means and discusses the connections between pleasant feelings and happiness, and between suffering and happiness.

He then points out the five things that keep a practitioner happy every day and draws the connection between small happiness and the great happiness of nirvana.

Using a match, Thay helps us tell nirvana's four virtues (Permanence, Happiness, Self, and Purity - written with the first letters being capitalized) apart from the typical teachings of the Buddha on permanence, happiness, self, and purity.

At the end, Thay says, "the kinds of uncapitalized happiness that lead us to capitalized Happiness are the ones we can make use of. Meanwhile, the kinds of uncapitalized happiness that don't lead us to capitalized Happiness are not true happiness. They are suffering."
